Searching for Hector Thomson

The story of one family, and the legacies of war across several generations. Alistair Thomson is an Australian historian who has written extensively about the testimonies of veterans of World War One. But until recently, he was not able to piece together the life of his own 'Digger' grandfather, Hector Thomson, who served in that war, and returned home to Australia with deep and lasting psychological trauma - the 'wounds of war' which were repudiated and misunderstood by the military and medical authorities throughout Hector Thomson's post war life, and even into the lives of successive generations of the Thomson family. His grandson Alistair goes on a search for more information about his grandfather's war related illness, by opening up the medical files, records that had been maintained by the government for more than forty years.
