UNESCO approves the creation of a World Radio Day

2011-11-04On November 4th, UNESCO has approved the idea of a World Radio Day celebration, to be held on February 13th.
The decision, that will be adopted officially at the end of the 36th sitting of UNESCO's General Conference, in Paris, means the oldest broadcast medium will get the same recognition as Television.
The date of 13 February, the day the United Nations radio was established in 1946, was proposed by the Director-General of UNESCO.
These celebration aims at:
-  raising greater awareness among the public and the media of the importance of radio
-  encouraging decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio
-  enhancing networking and international cooperation among broadcasters.

After the original proposal by Spain, UNESCO carried out a feasibility study starting in June 2011, and involving many stakeholders, that found that 91% of those asked supported the idea.

Created in 1949 with the support of UNESCO that has remained its key partner, URTI will officially support this initiative together with the other regional organizations that would be part of these official celebrations of the World Radio Day.
